03/10/16 Poetic Cardboard: 1 Developing Idea and Interviewing

Our group was given the words, 'psychological texts,' which at first we were a little stunted by as I think we got too caught up within looking at text in such a literal sense so to keep the ball moving and to create ongoing ideas I suggested we implemented the rule that no idea is a bad idea as it could lead us on to our final outcome. With restrictions removed we began questioning what theses words meant to us, psychological felt like our inner mind and when joined with text we began exploring what our inner text or inner monologue would be like. We then progressed to wanting to convey our inner monologue through the media of film as we thought this would would give us the greatest chance of being the most experimental. We then set out around the collage to ask people what their inner monologue would sound like through sound, asking question out pace, volume and repetitive dialogue, I personally found this fascinating and enjoyed getting to do some filming as I captured the interviewees emotion.

06/10/16 Type Project: 1 Designing Our Letters

Firstly we asked to design a set of completely  unique A's out of paper without gluing or sticking and a first I was a bit cautious as from the previous day I really struggled with the scalpel but I was determined to get better at it so I took some time and ended up creating some interesting looking A's, a couple were even picked out  in class for discussion and at the end of it I had more faith in my scalpel skills. So when it came to design for letters based around our favourite style I was more confident in my decisions and could work more quickly  in finishing the task

03/10/16 Poetic Cardboard: 2 Creating Final Piece

Once we had the interviews down and knew what sounds to look for I was put in charge of editing and finding the sounds online as I was the only one who knew how to do these things. So I started the editing process that took a while as I had to overlay many sounds in one video to create each person inner monologue, the sounds varied from chimps chattering to the tube. However once I was finished with this I felt the videos were somewhat lacking and needed more of a personal touch so we set out creating sounds of our own by recording pages flicking or foil rubbing together and adding these on top which I think improved in immensely

06/10/16 Type Project: 2 A Word for our Font

When i was first thinking for a name for my font I was thinking far to literal, such as flame or burn but then it was suggested to think more conceptually about fire, such a places where great fires have happened and the first thought that jumped into my head was London. Not only because of the great fire of 1966 but also the day before there was a massive fire alarm at Kings cross station, causing uproar across London. The making of the word took a significant amount of time as I was still new to using the scalpel and I chose to use card so the letters would stand up straight but it also meant it was harder to cut through. However in the end I really liked the finished project and decided to photograph it the darkness place I could find (which happened to be under the stairs) and project light onto it to create the illusion of some sort of fire nearby.

04/10/16 Lost Characters

I really struggle with this day as I'd never really done printmaking before or probably used a scalpel and when looking back on my design I wish I'd gone more abstract as I think I was thinking too literal. I also wished I had been more skilled with my scalpel as some of my edges were a bit flaky which effected the print. Overall I learnt a lot from this day as it was a new experience but I'm really not fond of my final piece and if I could do it again I would take more time thinking about my design.
