I found McQueen's designs so unusual and complex as every single one of his designs was a masterpiece as he experimented with fabric and shape in such unique ways. Each design seemed to tell a story with the juxtaposition of beauty and passion as his works come to life behind the camera and I am deeply saddened to have missed his exhibition at the V&A which looked enthralling as you could see the fine amount of detail that went into every single piece up close. I especially admired his experimentation with headpieces that looked like something entirely different from what I'd ever seen before, I never even really knew that head pieces were a actual creation to wear and from seeing McQueen's I have a strong desire to perhaps experiment with making one with materials as unique as the ones he chose: bones, feathers and glass.
Piper Shepard takes graphite coated muslin and cuts out her designs by hand which is extraordinary considering the minute details and perfect repetition of style. Not only do I admire her craftsmanship and dedication to create such beautiful pieces of work but I love her meaning behind her work as she states.'I am investigating the physical tolerance and qualities of cloth, considering cloth as a skin or membrane; understanding our knowledge of it as fugitive, with its abilities to sustain, absorb, hold history and memory.'
18th Century French Fashion
My guilty pleasure has always been looking through images of 18th century French fashion, I love the decadence, the luxurious femininity and the overall dedication to the designs. Because most women could only afford at best two of these gowns so much time, thought and preparation went into each outfit which is evident when looking at the designs, the perfect shades have been chosen to match, time consuming embroidery has been done perfectly and some of the finest ribbons and clothe have been used. When combining my research I felt that I had to include, in my opinion, the finest fashion era, especially as when experimenting with paper in class some of the designs did have glimpses of this era.
